![]() This handy little device attaches to the base of your lens and allows you to connect it to your computer via USB. The first step is to purchase the Sigma USB Dock. The process is actually pretty straightforward and only requires a few simple steps. Now that we’ve gone over when you might need to calibrate your Sigma lens, let’s talk about how to actually do it. This will ensure that the two are working together optimally and that you’re getting the most accurate focus possible. If you’ve just purchased a new camera, it’s always a good idea to calibrate the lens to the body. This can knock the internal components out of alignment, causing focus problems. If you drop your lens or otherwise subject it to a significant impactĪnother reason you might need to calibrate your Sigma lens is if you’ve dropped it or otherwise subject it to a hard jolt. This is particularly true if you’ve recently changed lenses or camera bodies, as the new equipment could be throwing off the calibration of your existing lens. If you notice that your images are consistently soft or out of focus, it could be a sign that your lens needs to be calibrated. If you notice that your images are consistently soft or out of focus There are actually a few different scenarios where it might be necessary. You might be wondering when you would need to calibrate your Sigma lens. However, some lenses, especially telephoto lenses, may benefit from occasional recalibration. Most lenses do not require calibration unless they are significantly out of adjustment. This is usually done by using a calibration chart or software that measures the amount of blur in an image. When Would You Need to Calibrate Your Sigma LensĬalibrating a lens is the process of adjusting the focus of the lens to produce sharp images. ![]() Its lineup of lenses, which are available for most major camera brands, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus, has earned Sigma a reputation as a leader in lens technology. ![]() That is why the best thing to do is to use LV, manually focus at 10x magnification and not rely on the AF.Sigma Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation specializing in the manufacture of camera and photo imaging products.įounded in 1961, Sigma prides itself on its innovative and high-quality products. You would think that at infinity your lens focus should be set all the way to the right at infinity but it is not the case. I am curious to know if there is a reliable method to make sure infinity focus is always correct, especially when shooting the sun, where you can adjust the focus only with the solar filter on, or during the very brief totality (when you shouldn't be fiddling with focus!! ![]() Problem with today's autofocus lenses seems to be that the focus ring can turn beyond the infinity marker, there is no hard stop at infinity (even when using manual focus). This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and all I can think of is "it could have been better, a lot better :-(" But then I saw other pictures or prominences and I could see mine was out of focus. When the totality hit, I was happy to get the picture below. I had set the focus with the solar filter before totality, or so I thought, since I could clearly see the sun spots. I used the 150-600mm Contemporary lens (Nikon Mount) with 1.4X tele-converter during the total eclipse of Aug 21. Then if you want to transfer that to the lens via the dock just use 1 nikon Af tune adjusment unit = 2 Sigma Af tune adjustment units (don't forget to set the camera's af tune back to zero if you fine tune the lens via the dock). You can use the in-camera AF-fine tuning if you want to quickly see if there is a noticeable difference in sharpness at very long range. Also minimize atmospheric distortion by shooting very early in the morning and not over a bunch reflective surfaces, if possible. turn the lens's OS to off, and use mirror-up remote release/ or self timer of at least 20 seconds (to give the camera time to settle down after you press the shutter release). Make sure you have excellent stabilization (use tripod plus lens resting on a chair/sandbag or something if you have to). Also don't forget to set your lens to minimum focus in between every shot. The live view shots are what you are trying to duplicate/approach with the Af tune adjustments. Take some shots in live view and compare your viewfinder-focused shots to the live view shots. A license plate has big letters/numbers, medium sized state lettering, and tiny license tab lettering which really allows you to see any changes in sharpness. I shoot a well lit, very far away, car license plate as a target for infinity adjustment.
